Portobello Flowers

While walking (barely) through the crush of humanity at the Portobello Road Market, Jacqui spied these flowers growing at the end of a side street.
The market has about 2,000 vendors on a Saturday selling everything you never wanted to buy, except for some fabulous looking fruits and vegetables. No bargains so we did not buy anything.

Buckingham Palace

We walked from Westminster Abbey through St. James Park on our way to the Palace to see the fanfare surrounding the Changing of the Guards. On the way, this beautiful view offered itself.

Wysteria 2005

A close up of our wysteria tree this Spring. Growing up, we had a similar tree in the front of our house on Wynsum Avenue in Merrick, NY. They are absolutely beautiful. This tree reminds me of my mother and father, particularly appropriate on Mothers Day weekend.

Egret

A member of the gallery watching my round at Westin's Rio Del Mar. He was joined by a fairly large variety of birds and dozens of iguanas enjoying the mid-morning sun.

Garden

I've been working on my garden this Spring. In year's past, I've made a fair amount of mistakes, planting hostas in bright sunshine, and daisies in a bog. We have a small area in the front of our house that had some perennials in it and three huge overgrown bushes. I moved the overgrown bushes to backyard two weeks ago, planted some more perennials in their stead, planted some geraniums as a border, weeded and mulched.

Finch Eggs Hatch

The eggs that are in the bird's nest above our door hatched over the weekend and three new hatchlings are alive and well. It looks like Momma Finch laid 5 eggs. One was a dud and one of the newborns did not make it, leaving three baby birds.
Right now, they look like three feathery blobs until Momma or Daddy show up with some food. Then they stick their heads up in the air, mouths wide open to receive food. Once fed, back to sleep.

Northern Flicker

I've started filling my bird feeders with food and suet and have had a steady stream of cardinals, blue jays and woodpeckers feeding, along with the finches, grackles, doves, and blackbirds.
Tonight, I spotted what appears to be a northern flicker or some kind of woodpecker feeding on some peanuts at the hopper.

Cherry Blossoms

For the past seven years or so, I've made a "tradition" of sorts of organizing my colleagues at work to walk among the cherry trees down at the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC on a beautiful day when the blossoms are at their peak. If tourists from all over the globe come to DC this time of year to see the blossoms, it would be a shame to live here and not enjoy them.
Some years we pick a day that is better than others and this year we managed to pick the best day. Yesterday, Tuesday, April 2nd, was a fabulous DC spring day, with temperatures around 70 degrees, beautiful sunshine, and a nice breeze. Although I was hoping for a crowd of at least six, only Judy and Mercedes were able to join me. We had a great time.
Our office is about a 30 minute walk from the Tidal Basin. Once there, we were greeted with this view.

Finch Nest

When we bought our house about 5 years ago, there was a nest in the window ledge above our door. The prior owners told us that each year a robin would lay eggs in it and we really liked that. The first spring, just as forecast, a robin laid some eggs and 3 baby robins were successfully raised. Then, no more birds came to start a family with our family. Until this spring, when a pair of red finches started working on the nest.

Turkey Vultures

Each day, as I drive into work, I pass a restaurant called Old Anglers Inn on McArthur Blvd in Potomac, Maryland. I've noticed a large number of these birds sitting in trees. They look like vultures to me. I could not get that close so the picture is pretty grainy.
