2005 Advertising Law Group Dinner
We were able to schedule the annual advertising law group dinner last night. We had 35 attendees at a sit down dinner in our home. Jacqui cooked another great meal, while I was able to plank grill a whole salmon I caught in Alaska. 32 drinkers in the crowd downed 34 bottles of wine.

Redskinettes
I went to the Redskins game today purportedly to see Brett Favre's one and only appearance in Washington during his storied NFL career. Mostly I was catching up with my friend Reed who invited me. The Redskins played poorly throughout but the Redskinettes performed beautifully.

Margit and Marcos
Margit and Marcos
We first met Margit during our "trip of a lifetime" to Tuscany several years back. Jacqui and I were eating in a local family style restaurant and the couple to our left were complaining about Italian coffee not being as good as Dunkin Donuts. We looked to see who was sitting to our right and there was Margit. Several carafes of wine flowed over dinner and then we went continued the discussion over a few more bottles in a piazza bar. Since then Margit has been to the US three times to visit with us. This time, she was accompanied by her beau - Marcos - who she presented to us. He is clearly in love with her and they are as happy as any couple we've met (except for us).

FTC 90th Anniversary Dinner
FTC 90th Anniversary Dinner
This week the FTC celebrated its 90th Anniversary and held a two day forum to review its accomplishments. The "FTC Alumni Society" sponsored a dinner to mark the occassion and Collier Shannon Scott had two table there. Judge Posner was the keynote speaker and remarked that it was odd to have such a celebration for the 90th anniversary and wondered if the agency believed that it would not last to mark its centennial. Tim Muris, pictured here, gave a toast in the agency's honor.

New Years at Norbeck
New Years at Norbeck
Last night, Jacqui and I attended the big New Years Eve bash at Norbeck Country Club. We were excited and a bit apprehensive as we really don't know too many people at the club and are not good dancers. Still, we always have a great time by ourselves and we both know how to work a room. I put on a suit and Jacqui had a sleek pants suit on and off we went. As we pulled into the club, we saw that they had valet parking for the night. We walked in and were greeted by Steve, who runs the catering side of the operations. He recognized me but did not know my name. When he asked what table we were sitting at, I thought we were going to have a problem as we did not know, but they had placed us at a table with a group of 10 and we were ushered into the party. They had three rooms filled with buffet stations and several open bars. The table we were assigned was in the Norbeck Room rather than the main ballroom. We grabbed some drinks and checked out the food. All of it was quite delicious. Lamb chops, crabcakes, raw oysters and some lettuce-wrapped chicken were the standouts for me. We talked to one or two couples we knew and then I saw a couple with whom I had played golf over the summer on one or two occassions. They were with another couple but the three other couples in their table had cancelled so they invited us to join them, which we did. They were excellent company. The rooms were decorated in true new years holiday spirit. Noisemakers and hats were on each table. They passed out glow sticks and lights on chains too. Lots of fun. \ After dinner but before desert, the band started to play. It was an 8 piece band and they were quite good at rhythm and blues and motown. By the second song, the dance floor was filled. Jacqui and I danced about 4 songs and sat down. Ron offered to go outside and smoke cigars to welcome in the year and Jacqui said fine so we ventrued outside for 30 minutes and smoked a nice Montecristo. After that, we walked back in and desert was being served. I had some crepes susette and cannolis. We danced and danced. And then it was just about midnight. Everyone was us, using their noisemakers, the balloons fell from the ceiling and confetti started streaming. It was quite a sight. A few racy kisses from my wife. And lots of laughs about dancing on New Years at the club. Here is a video of some of the after midnight dancing. All in all, a great night. Neither of us could think of anything that Norbeck Country Club could have done to improve it and we look forward to going again next year.

Team Lunch
Team Lunch
On Wednesday, Judy, Alicia, Christie and I went to Fahrenheit's in the Georgetown Four Seasons to celebrate another year working together. The food was really good (I had tomato soup and a cobb salad -- much, much better than one might expect), and we all really like each other. Of course, we asked the waiter to snap a pic for the site.

Commander Tom
Commander Tom
As I sit here on a Thursday afternoon, the tv weather and internet are buzzing over the season's first winter storm watch. Apparently, a "Rather Complex And Extended Period Of Wintry Weather Is On Tap For The Later Part Of The Week Into The Weekend." Still, listening to the reports on the Weather Channel, no one is willing to declare definitively whether we are going to have rain, snow, ice, a mixture of those, or nothing. It seems to me that weather forecasting may be the one area where advances in technology have increased the odds of a wrong forecast. I've often been heard to say that if I could get the chance to go back in my life and choose a new career, I would not choose to be a lawyer. I say this even though I absolutely love my job and have had more success than I would ever have imagined when I started in 1981. Nope. If I could do it again, I would opt to become a television weather personality. My favorite television weather personality is not Willard Scott (the original Bozo the clown). It is not Bob Ryan, the local NBC affiliate's weather guy. It is not Sue Palka, from Fox's dc station. And it is not Al Roker, slimmed down or fattened up. Nope. My favorite, all-time weatherman has been -- and always will be -- Tom Jolls of WKBW-TV in Buffalo, NY. Tom Jolls was a 34 year vet of WKBW-TV’s "Weather Outside" and host of one of the city’s most memorable children’s programs, "The Commander Tom Show." Before Channel 7, he anchored news at WBEN-TV, wrote and produced radio dramas f or WBEN-AM. Seated at the Channel 7 news desk with Rick Azar and Irv Weinstein, Jolls made up the longest running anchor team in the history of television (24 years - begining in 1965.) I believe he finally retired in 1999. He never had a college degree in meteorology but usually got the forecast correct. Tom's shtick was to do the weather outside -- literally. His studio was in the lot of WKBW-TV, and rain or shine, Tom would be outside. In the wintry weather, his forecast was usually quite quick and to the point. Oftentimes, he was not visible because there would be a "white-out" from all the snow falling between the end of the camera lens and where Tom stood a few feet away. In the summer, Tom could be seen flipping burgers on the grill. Everyone in Buffalo watched his report, particularly when the weather was bad, to see how cold he was. Once in a while, some college students (me on one occassion) would time a drive-by and pelt him with a snow ball while he was live on tv. As was true with many local television personalities of that era, Tom also hosted one of the city’s most memorable children’s programs, "The Commander Tom Show." I recall that show would feature the Three Stooges and Spanky and our Gang, although I might be wrong about it. So, if I was about to graduate high school, I would look to become a tv weatherman and salute Commander Tom by continuing his tradition of doing the weather outside. I think I could do better without a meteorology degree than today's so-called tv weather experts.

Cherry Queens 2002
Cherry Queens 2002
While on our annual Cherry Blossom walk, we walked around the entire path circling the basin, stopping for some Dove bars, and to breathe the perfectly cherry scented air. When we arrived at the Jefferson Memorial, all of the beauty queens competing in the National Conference of State Societies Cherry Blossom Princess contest were assembled. I had a chance to mingle with Miss South Dakota and Miss Massachusetts. I did not get their names but hope that one of them wins. If either or both of you manages to find this photo, please send me an email letting us know how you did. I will post the information here. After an hour stroll around the Tidal Basin, we walked back to the office, congratulating ourselves on having the wisdom to let our phones ring into voicemail and our emails and faxes pile up, at least for two hours of good living..... I received the following comment (when I used Greymatter): Replies: 1 Comment The names of the two cherry blossom princesses on April 3 in your photo are Ammielou Keating of South Dakota and Elizabeth Baebel of Massachusetts. The cherry blossom princess program began in 1948 as part of an effort to heal the wounds of war with Japan. But it is not a beauty contest. It is a college- level Washington classroom for one week where students get to meet top women role models, government and military leaders, journalists, and policy makers. The winner, the United States Cherry Blossom Queen, is chosen by a random process from 55 state and territitorial cherry blossom princesses sponsored by the state societies. Princesses also represent about 12 international embassies but they are not eligible for the Queen selection. The new U.S. Cherry Blossom Queen for 2002 is Elizabeth O'Connor of Connecticut who will represent the U.S. on a two-week visit to Japan in May. Since 1948, the winner is chosen by a random spin of a wheel of fortune at the Grand Ball which was held on April 5th. Whatever state the wheel lands on, that princess is the Queen for the next year. See www.StateSocities.org for more information.
